Wood Library Funding Proposition Passes – Thank You!

WOOD LIBRARY PROPOSITION PASSES

With 2,198 ballots cast, voters approve $87,414 levy increase for Wood Library

May 21, 2024 (Canandaigua, NY)—A proposition for Wood Library funding was approved by Canandaigua City School District voters in an election held May 21, 2024, by a margin of 1,590 in favor to 608 opposed.  The voter-approved proposition authorizes the Canandaigua City School District to levy and collect an annual tax for Wood Library in the amount of $1,007,564, starting with the October 2024 tax bill.  The projected library property tax rate will be 30 cents per thousand dollars of assessed property valuation.

“Everyone benefits from a strong library in our community,” said Wood Library Board President Leslie Mast following the tabulation of votes.  “Canandaigua City School District voters recognize this, and place a high value on Wood Library’s services and innovative programs that support people at every stage of life.”

Executive Director Jenny Goodemote reports that, “In 2023, library use was up across the board.  The best libraries offer information and services that people need, along with opportunities to learn and make community connections. The levy increase will help us meet an increasing demand for digital content, support investments in library collections, assure access to library services, and address state-mandated minimum-wage increases.”

In 2025, community-based funding will represent about 74% of the library’s projected budget of $1,354,700.  Fundraising and endowment income will make up the balance needed to fully fund library operations.

Goodemote reports that people engage with Wood Library in new ways all the time.  “Digital content is available to anyone with a library card.   We loan Firesticks, hotspots, fishing poles, museum passes, and outdoor games.  Staff provide tech support at the library and off-site.  Community groups and tutors use our meeting rooms and study spaces year round.  Later this year, we will introduce a Little Free Farm Stand on library property, sensory tool kits, and a beautiful reading garden – all funded by donors.”

Wood Library is a full-service community library serving everyone who resides in the Canandaigua City School District.  Its mission is to provide exceptional public library service in a comfortable and inclusive environment where people can spark their imaginations, satisfy their curiosity, engage in lifelong learning, and make community connections.  Learn more about Wood Library at www.woodlibrary.org.
