Neurodivergent

Wood Library is working on becoming a more welcoming space for our patrons who have different sensory needs. Find what we’re offering below, and if there’s something we can improve on fill out our survey!

Social Stories

We have prepared three social stories to prepare patrons for their visit to the library.

Storytime with Ms. Rachel
Visiting the library (Children’s)
Visiting the library (Teens and Adults)

Sensory Kits

Our sensory kits can be found at our main checkout desk and our second-floor Information Desk. Each kit is fit with:

  • Noise-reducing headphones
  • A visual timer
  • Fidgets

Our main floor kit also has:

  • 8 mini sensory mats
  • A blackout sensory tent

Our sensory kits were purchased with funds raised from Library Giving Day.

Additional Resources

Wiggle Cushions
These cushions are available on the first and second floor. They can be used on a chair or the floor.

Backed Floor Seats
Available in our children’s programming. Adults get priority for these seats to help them participate with their young ones.

Portable Study Carrels
To help block out distractions. You can find these at our first and second-floor desks.

AAC Communication Board

Through a grant with the OWWL Library System, Wood Library has an AAC Communication Board that will be available during programs. The library also received a collection of titles for our youngest patrons to learn about the different ways people communicate.

How can we do better?

Coming Soon- Calming Corners

Feeling overwhelmed? Three new calming corners will be created in our children, teen, and adult areas in the coming year. These areas will have mindful activities, a comfortable seat, and fidgets to calm patrons.

Funding for the children and adult Calming Corners was provided by the Harold Hacker Grant for the Advancement of Libraries.
