New Service Announcement!

January 3, 2019 (Canandaigua, NY)—Wood Library is once again stepping up to help bridge the digital divide by offering WiFi Hotspots to library patrons.  WiFi Hotspots provide connectivity to the internet.

“We know that there are adults in the community who do not have internet access at home,” reports Library Director Jenny Goodemote.  “We see them in the library all the time using our public computers to complete a variety of tasks and to access information they need.  Now, they can borrow a hotspot and use it at home for up to a week at a time.”  She noted that this is also a great option for people who have limited data plans or for families who are traveling.

Wood Library has purchased 4 WiFi Hotspots and is funding the monthly data plans through its operating budget.  Library patrons can borrow the hotspots for up to one week at a time.  Borrowers must be at least 18 years old with a valid photo ID and an updated registered library card.

The Canandaigua-based community library has a track record of offering WiFi hotspots to those who need them.  Three years ago, the library started a hotspot loan program for Canandaigua City School District students who don’t have internet at home.  This new program expands the program for adults.

“Connectivity is absolutely essential in today’s world,” states Lauren Moore, Executive Director of the Pioneer Library System and a founding member of the Finger Lakes Digital Inclusion Alliance.  “Think about how frustrating it is when you have spotty internet service.  Now, consider what it would be like to function as a parent or caregiver or job seeker without the internet.  Wood Library’s WiFi hotspot service is an attempt to help people connect to the information they need and bridge the digital divide in our community.”

Celebrating 160 years of service to the Greater Canandaigua community, Wood Library, located at 134 N Main St, Canandaigua, is a full-service community library and registered charitable organization serving everyone who resides in the Canandaigua City School District.  Its mission is to provide exceptional public library service in a comfortable and safe environment where people can satisfy their curiosity, stimulate their imaginations, and connect to the local community and to the world.
