Description: Shadd Cary was the first black woman in North America to edit and publish a newspaper, one of the first black female lawyers in the US and an advocate for granting women the right to vote. She was part of the black emigration movement to Canada and both a friend and foe of Frederick Douglass. Jane Rhodes is a Professor and Department Head of African American Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the author of "Mary Ann Shadd Cary: The Black Press and Protest in the 19th Century."
