Environmental Policy

Wood Library is committed to reducing our environmental footprint and promoting environmental stewardship at all levels of our organization.

Our goal is to minimize Wood Library’s impact and maximize the ability of future generations to live, work, and play in our shared natural environment, with equal access to clean air, clean water, and natural resources.

We will strive to minimize pollution and waste, conserve energy and water, protect habitat, support renewable energy resources, buy environmentally friendly products, and encourage environmentally preferable transportation. These efforts will extend to contractor and supplier relationships, and we will encourage contractors and suppliers serving or otherwise acting on behalf of Wood Library to meet our standards of environmental performance. We will offer ample opportunities for community members to learn about environmental stewardship and will seek out opportunities to partner with other organizations that share this commitment.Employee understanding and involvement are essential to the implementation of this policy. All employees will receive a copy of this policy and be informed about Wood Library’s efforts to improve our environmental stewardship. Everyone associated with Wood Library (staff, trustees, volunteers) will be involved in supporting our goals.

Munchtime at the Movies: The Lorax
Thursday, April 18 | 12:00—1:00 PM

Family program. Bring a lunch to munch and watch the 2012 animated musical fantasy film based on Dr. Seuss’ classic tale about a grumpy but endearing creature who is fighting to protect his world and the 12-year old boy who discovers him.

Earth Day Fair
Monday, April 22 | 10:00 AM—6:00 PM

Connect and learn from community organizations that are focused on a more sustainable future. Learn how to divert waste from the landfill, how to compost, what to recycle, and how “stuff” can be reused. Join the Citizens Climate Lobby and take a pledge to practice lake-friendly lawn care. Learn how to conserve water with a rain barrel. Get your bike fixed at our “fixit station”. Check out our electric vehicle demo. Donate gently used books, purses, eye glasses, toner cartridges, shoes and boots, coats, and backpacks, and plastic bags for reuse! Film Screening: The Landfillharmonic: a symphony of the human spirit

This award-winning documentary (2015) tells the story of the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan children’s musical group who perform using musical instruments made from materials found in a nearby landfill.

Wood Library, Climate Smart Canandaigua To Host Earthapalooza

Suite of environmentally-friendly events designed to educate the public on sustainable issues and practices

CANANDAIGUA, NY — Wood Library and the City of Canandaigua’s Climate Smart Canandaigua (CSC) will host Earthapalooza on Earth Day, Monday, April 22, 2019 at Wood Library, 1fThis all-ages event is free and open to the public.

Earthapalooza is designed to raise awareness of environmental issues and educate the community on actions they can take to help reverse climate change, with a focus on waste management and food waste diversion. A schedule of events is listed below.

“From recycling to composting to a bicycle fixit clinic, Earthapalooza offers people of all ages the opportunity to learn more about environmental issues and bring environmentally sustainable practices into their lives,” said CSC Chair Suzette van der Sterre. “Climate Smart Canandaigua is excited to partner with Wood Library in making green initiatives accessible to all.”

“Wood Library is committed to environmental stewardship and sustainability,” said Wood Library Director Jenny Goodemote. “We are pleased to partner with Climate Smart Canandaigua and other organizations to draw attention to the many ways individuals and businesses can act to reverse global warming, reduce waste, and adopt lake-friendly practices. We are proud to co-sponsor Earthapalooza on Earth Day.”

About Climate Smart Canandaigua
The Climate Smart Canandaigua (CSC) task force was created by the City of Canandaigua in January 2019 to engage the community in addressing the climate change crisis. Comprised of City of Canandaigua residents, the CSC’s goals are to Provide ongoing implementation of actions related to climate change and increase efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and achieve cost savings in the process; assess baseline conditions, establish goals and develop plans and suggest policies to achieve goals; and educate the community and stakeholders on the value of the goals and plans.
