Award-winning journalist and author to visit Wood Library March 28

Award-winning Canadian journalist and author Omar El Akkad will visit Wood Library on Thursday, March 28, at 10:30AM, to discuss his book American War, which is the 2019 Rochester Reads selection.
American War is a powerful novel about a second U.S. Civil War in the late 21st century.  After climate change leads to political upheaval and a decimation of the population, a plague is unleashed and further devastates the country.  The story follows the experience of six year old Sarat Chestnut whose family is forced into a camp for displaced persons after her father is killed.
Omar El Akkad was born in Egypt and grew up in Qatar before moving to Canada with his family.  As a reporter, he covered many of the most important global stories of the last decade including the NATO-led war in Afghanistan, military trials at Guatanamo Bay, Cuba, the Arab Spring revolution in Egypt, and the Black Lives Matter protests in Ferguson, Missouri.  He is a graduate of Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, and received Canada’s National Newspaper Award for investigative reporting for his coverage of the “Toronto 18” terrorism arrests.  This is his first novel.
