What is a Chromebook?
A Chromebook is a personal computer running Google Chrome as its operating system. The devices are designed to be used while connected to the Internet and support applications that reside on the Web, rather than traditional PC applications like Microsoft Office and Photoshop that reside on the machine itself.  Using web applications rather than traditional PC applications is known as cloud computing (basically, online storage and software).

How can I borrow a library Chromebook?
To borrow a library Chromebook you must be 18 years or older and provide a valid library card and photo ID at the time of checkout. You will be asked to agree to the library’s Chromebook Borrower Policy & Procedure.

How do I log in to a library Chromebook?
All Chromebook users will login as a “Guest User” and the login button can be found on the lower left hand corner of the login screen.

What can I use the library’s Chromebooks for?
The library’s Chromebooks can be used for:

  • Basic Internet browsing,
  • Checking email,
  • Facebook, Twitter, and checking other social networks.

What Programs are on the library’s Chromebooks?
The only program on a Chromebook is the Google Chrome Internet browser.

Can I download other programs to a library Chromebook?
No, the Chrome OS will not be able to run programs other than the Chrome browser.

Can I use Microsoft Word or other word processing software on a Chromebook?
Because Microsoft Word is a program outside of Chrome you cannot use it. You can, however, use Google Drive or other online web apps for word processing. Another option is to type things up in your email account.

Is my information secure on the library’s Chromebooks?
Yes, because you will be logging in as a “Guest User” all of the information you view or accounts you log into while using a Chromebook will be deleted from the Chromebook’s history as soon as you shutdown the computer.

Can I save documents, files, etc. to the library’s Chromebooks?
No, along with deleting the history and removing account login information all saved data will be removed from the device upon shutdown.
